The Advent Series-Day ONE

Day 1: Light in Darkness

Genesis 1 1:1-4 (NIV)

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness."

In the next 24 days, I’m inviting you on a journey into the story of Christmas. We’ll celebrate a joyful season filled with lights. We’ll visit fields illuminated by angels. We’ll study a star that shined a great distance to announce the birth of a King.

But here is where we begin.

In darkness.

Before the Sin. Before the Savior. Before the Light. Our journey begins here in the first moments of our world’s existence. This world is a formless void of darkness. Yet here, in the darkness, the Spirit of God is moving. Moving upon the face of the waters. And soon the Spirit will speak.

A simple command, then... Light. And soon after life. Abundant, immeasurable, life. Bursting. Sprouting. Charging. Flying. Life.

But look closer. Did you see it? Hidden in this moment is whole plan of salvation: God searches darkness; God speaks into darkness; He creates light in the darkness; and soon after, life. This is “The Story.” A story told by God over & over again throughout the scriptures. A story of grace painted a thousand different ways. The story of light spoken into darkness. A story of life brought forth from emptiness. The story of Jesus... The story that is God’s Heart. Before we sinned, before we even existed, a Life-Bringing Savior was searching the darkness on a mission to create light. And that is the story of Christmas, too. It is the story God still telling everyday.

So take a breath and remember this story. Today, pause. God may be moving. He is moving in the darkness. And He is ready to speak life.
