When you come in to the studio for a consultation, we do a lot of planning together! But I am checking YOU out! :) I am paying attention to your skin tones and thinking about what COLORS would look best on you......and on your baby.

So I thought I would give you a quick tutorial here! Most skin tones fall in two categories: Warm or cool. Do you know which you have? Which color does your newborn have?

Cool-toned Skin

Does your skin have cool undertones? Does it lean pink, red, or blue? Do you have blue eyes and pale skin? Do you burn easily outside in the sun? Do you have blue-ish veins rather than green? You have a cool-toned skin.

Here's a quick list to determine if you have cool-toned skin:

  • lighter hair (light brown, natural blonde)

  • grey or blue eyes

  • Your skin tone is fair or pale

  • You have pink skin undertones

Best colors to choose for newborn images with cool toned skin:

Think about the cooler colors...usually spring colors!!! Think: sky blues, cobalt, light lilacs, light purples, emerald greens, light grassy tones and anything pastel. Avoid too orange or bright yellow—they’ll overpower you and the baby!

Creamy tans look good on every skin tone!

For warm-toned newborn skin

Newborn babies with warm toned skin have more yellow, peachy, or golden tones to it. You can ask yourself: Do you tan easily in the sun? Are your veins more greenish? Do you have dark hair and dark eyes?

Here's quick checklist to determine if you’re warm-toned.

  • darker hair (black, dark brown).

  • brown or hazel eyes.

  • Your skin tone is dark, olive or golden in tone.

  • yellow skin undertones.

Best colors to choose for newborn images with warm undertones:

Just the opposite from above! Think WARM fall colors.....fiery reds, oranges, rusty tones, creams, camel, and all things earth tones. If you love cool colors like green and blue....choose warmer versions of the cool color families like olive, smoky blues, fuchsia, violet and orchid. BRIGHT and fun work well! AVOID: Pastels

And then there are Neutrals! Are you somewhere in between the warm and the cool checklists? Then you are a neutral! Babies with these skin tones can work BOTH ends of the spectrum!

And finally.....when in doubt, choose neutral tones...creams and tan work with every skin type! Your photographer can help you out if you are stuck and wanting to choose just the right colors for your photo session!
